The 11th Panchen Lama has accused vendors on Taobao of selling artworks that are falsely attributed to him and is asking the public not to buy them.
In a WeChat post Tuesday, Gyancain Norbu, the 27-year-old Tibetan Buddhist leader, declared all calligraphy being sold on the e-commerce platform bearing his name as fake.
The Panchen Lama said in the post he found around a dozen Taobao vendors selling such works after doing a keyword search of his name.
“None of them are my authentic artworks,” the Panchen Lama wrote in his WeChat post, “please don’t buy them.”
The listings appear to have since been removed.
The Panchen Lama is known for his calligraphy skills. He spends an hour each day practicing the art both in Chinese and Tibetan, reported Tibet.cn.
The Panchen Lama often donates his artwork to raise money for public causes.
