Thirsty visitors to the Shenzhen (International) Science Film Week have been getting their caffeine hit a little quicker thanks to China’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI) Café, reports Guangzhou Daily.
In responding to voice commands, the robot barista is capable of fulfilling orders in less than a minute!
According to a human staff member, all kinds of coffee can be ordered, with a cup of Italian coffee made within 42 seconds, a latte in 78 seconds, with 90 seconds needed to craft a cappuccino.
The café not only boasts a robotic coffee maker, but robotic waiters, and all kinds of AI facilities. Customers can order via an electronic screen or simply ask for what they want, and the AI coffee machine will grind and brew the coffee and deliver it to the customer.
Coffee aficionados said the robot made coffee was every bit as good as coffee made by people.
“AI robots are more data oriented. Moreover, they can understand Cantonese,” said one staff member.
At the core of the AI café is Sawyer, a cobot (collaborative robot) from Rethink Robotics Co., a new generation of robot with flexible arms, which makes coffee making possible.
The AI platform, Kepler system, was developed by IngDan, a company involved in hardware innovation, making the interaction between robots, customers, and other AI facilities possible.
The IngDan AI café is just a prototype. A permanent AI café will be launched in November at the 19th China International Shenzhen Hi-tech Fair.
“AI café will overturn the traditional café. For now, an AI café costs more, in the long term, it will cost less and this is the future trend,” said Wang Gang, PR director of IngDan.
