ISLAMABAD: Senior PML-N leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has raised reservations over the appointment of Sardar Mohammad Yaqoob Khan Nasir as the PML-N’s interim president and questioned the reason for calling a meeting if the decision was already taken in Lahore, media report.
The former interior minister also asked why Nasir’s name was announced before the meeting of the PML-N’s central working committee.
PML-N leader Khawaja Saad Rafique also said that Nisar was right in his opinion.
However, Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah said that all party leaders have their opinions, but differing opinions does not mean that there are rifts within the party.
Nisar was also missing from the recently held PML-N GT Road rally and had said that no senior party leader was part of the former premier’s ‘homecoming’ caravan.
Earlier, Nasir was appointed interim president of PML-N after a meeting of the party’s central working committee, which met in Islamabad to give formal approval of his appointment.
According to reports, Nawaz discussed Nasir’s interim presidency with the senior party leadership at his residence and is said to have received no serious resistance to the proposal.
On August 8, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) notified PML-N that with the disqualification of Nawaz Sharif, the party must elect its new president as according to the Political Parties Order (2002), a disqualified person cannot hold the key party position.
