Advocate Azhar Siddique filed a plea on behalf of the Lahore Press Club stating that the government has failed to provide security to media outlets.
The plea has been filed 12 hours after miscreants opened fire outside City 42 office in Lahore.
Petition mentions the latest attack on the television channel and declares provision of security government’s responsibility as per the Constitution of Pakistan.
The plea requests the court to initiate legal action against Punjab Home Minister for not fulfilling his responsibilities. The high court has been requested to take notice of the issue and order the government to realize its responsibility.
On Sunday night, unidentified armed motorcyclists opened fire on City42’s office on Lahore’s Jail Road and fled the scene. Chief Minister (CM) Punjab Shahbaz Sharif, taking notice of the incident ordered immediate arrest of the culprits.
According to the details, a heavy contingent of police arrived on the scene and launched investigation after collecting bullet shells from the crime scene.
Leading journalists including President of Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) Rana Azeem condemned the incident and demanded that the felons be arrested immediately.
In November 2015, Dunya News came under attack as unknown assailants hurled a grenade at its Bureau office in Faisalabad, injuring three employees. The attack shattered window panes, while cars and motorcycles parked outside were significantly damaged by the explosion. Threatening pamphlets were also dropped at the crime scene.
Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Pervaiz Rashid condemned the ‘cowardly’ attack.
Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif and Chief Minister (CM) Shahbaz took notice of the assault and ordered authorities concerned to apprehend the extremists responsible.
On January 13, ARY office in federal capital’s F-7 area was attacked by unidentified motorcyclists.
Reportedly terrorists used a cracker and opened fire which injured a Non Linear Editor (NLE). The injured was transferred to the Polyclinic Hospital for first aid.
The attackers fled the scene as the security guard fired in response. The attackers left pamphlets on the scene.
