As the devastated attack in the Paris gradually subsided, it was daybreak over the other side of the globe, where Chinese people woke up and shocked, horrified by the news. Chilling descriptions of the scenes by eyewitness rendered them speechless: “They were shooting at us like if we were birds,”… “People all lower their body exactly to the ground. I was among them. It’s like a century long…”.
Reading all these gruesome, barbaric acts, we can’t help but burst out our grief and anger.
Perhaps it is true that there isn’t much ordinary people and innocent civilians could do when they come face to face with terrorism, but we mourn and show our solidarity with each other when terrorism like this happened. In Paris, residents dropped quilts from their windows to cover bodies on the street; Football fans sang La Marseillaise, the French national anthem, together while they withdrew from the stadium Stade de France; Taxi drivers all shut off their meters so to take the stunned passersby home quickly and safely.
Yes, it was the darkest day in Paris. But it was also a day that we all witness the beauty and greatness of human nature.
In China, not only are we mourning for the victims in this attack, we are being devastated by the fact people had lost their lives to terrorism. We believe that out from the deep grief, solidarity can form an invincible power that will protect the poor, the weak and the innocents, for life is a global value in all civilizations.
We might tremble in face of terror attacks, but everyone who loves and respects life will surely and bravely stand opposite to the terrorism forever. After the tragedy in Paris, national leaders from different countries immediately gave their condolences to France, condemning the terrorists. Chinese President Xi Jinping also sent a message of condolences to his French counterpart, Francois Hollande, expressing “strongest” condemnation over Paris terror attacks. Terrorism is a common enemy of all mankind and a common threat to the entire international community. “China is firmly opposed to all forms of terrorism, and stands ready to work with France and other countries to boost security and counter-terrorism cooperation, so as to safeguard world peace and protect the people of all countries in the world,” Xi said.
After the two World Wars, it has been a consensus that all conflicts must abandon indiscriminate violence. The Paris terror attacks will be an inevitable topic in the upcoming G20 summit. The world today remains many inequalities. More in-depth discussion is needed on how to promote a more equal and balanced world development. People from many corners of the world are also subjected to regional terrorism. All national leaders must take actions to fight together against the terrorism and extremism.
Michel Walzer, political philosopher and professor at Princeton University, once said, “Terrorism seems to stem from extreme poverty and global inequality, but destitution and inequality are not valid reasons for nationalist terrorist actions.”
Today, we stand together to grief and to demonstrate our opposition to terrorism. This common ground shall never disappear due to any differences, because we are facing common enemy to all human civilizations.(The Daily Mail – People’s Daily news exchange item)
