ISLAMABAD: Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) stalwart, Syed Khursheed Shah, during his speech in National Assembly on Tuesday urged the government to declare an emergency in earthquake-affected areas of the country and spend the major chunk of national budget on the homeless people of the region.
“Chitral, Dir and Bajaur agency too are a part of this country and the citizens of these areas desperately need our help in these testing times,” said Khursheed Shah.
The PPP leader maintained that the poor people residing in these areas, affected by the October 26 earthquake, have rights equal to those residing in Lahore, Punjab province’s capital.
“We consider the people of these areas as third class citizens, just think, what they are going through in this chilling weather with no shelter and no food,” Shah asked the government lawmakers attending the session.
“I dare the Prime Minister of Pakistan and Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) to sit on road without shelter in this weather or let their children sit without a heater,” said an angry Shah.
The PPP leader demanded that government should halt all development projects and help the homeless people of quake-affected areas build their homes.
Pakistan Muslim League Functional (PML-F) MNA Syed Kazim Shah demanded that the second phase of local government elections in Sindh should be held under the supervision of Army.
The PML-F MNA further demanded that the case of eleven political workers murdered during first phase of election in Khairpur district of Sindh should be transferred to military court.
Speaking on point of order , PPP MNA Nafeesa Shah maintained that rigging complaints can be registered at Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
About the deadly Khairpur incident during the first phase of LG polls, Nafeesa Shah told the house that Sindh government has already requested judicial inquiry in the case and all parties shall wait for the inquiry. “If the judicial commission refers the case to military court, we will not object,” said the PPP MNA.
The National Assembly session was held under deputy speaker Murtuza Javed Abbasi as the newly-elected speaker in a special meeting with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
