LAHORE: At least five labourers were killed and three others injured when an explosion occurred at a fuel depot on the outskirts of Lahore on Monday night, rescue officials said.
According to details, the blast happened when a fuel tanker was refilling the fuel tank at the factory in Burki area of the provincial capital.
Rescue 1122 spokesman Jam Sajjad confirmed that five factory workers have died while three have been injured, who have been shifted to the nearby Ghurki hospital.
The fire fighters reached the spot and extinguished the blaze after an hour.
A Rescue 1122 official said “the oil tanker caught fire which spread in the area where labourers were working. It caused a massive explosion which killed five labourers while three were injured.”
Meanwhile, Burki police reached the spot and arrested the factory supervisor Shahid
SHO Burki Naveed Azam said that a case of criminal negligence would be registered against the factory owner, Abdul Waheed.
The factory owner was not present at the site and police are carrying out search operations for his arrest.
Identities of four victims have been ascertained, however, one body remains unidentified.
The deceased include, Imran son of Abdul Rasheed, Muhammad Ishfaq son of Yousif, Imran son of Faju and Sagar..
It may be recalled that this industrial disaster comes only days after a tragedy in Lahore’s Sundar Industrial Estate where a factory building collapsed, killing more than 50 labourers working there.
