ISLAMABAD: Opposition parties on Thursday staged a walkout from the Lower House of the Parliament to protest the remarks made by PML-N legislator Talal Chaudhry while National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq also left the House over remarks made by his fellow party member.
Chaudhry had referred to Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Information Secretary Shireen Mazari as “aunty”. Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq took notice of Chaudhry’s remarks, asking for the word to be expunged from official records.
Talal Chaudhry later apologised for the remark and took his words back.
The Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz lawmaker also targeted Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Pervez Khattak with allegations of nepotism.
He then also took a swipe at Reham Khan and alleged that the wife of PTI Chairman Imran Khan was using the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government’s helicopter as a ‘rickshaw’.
Speaker of the National Assembly Ayaz Sadiq allowed the treasure bench member to continue with his speech despite objections raised by opposition members of the House.
PTI Members of the National Assembly (MNAs) staged a walkout over remarks made by Talal Chaudhary.
The PML-N leader then turned his guns on PTI’s Dr Arif Alvi over the issue of the seven-month-long absence of PTI legislators from the National Assembly, when the party was staging anti-government protests at Islamabad’s D-Chowk.
He went on to question the professional integrity of the opposition leader.
The verbal attack prompted the Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) to also stage a walkout from the National Assembly.
Member of National Assembly (MNA) Sheikh Aftab Ahmed from Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Minister for States and Frontier Regions (Safron) retired Lt Gen Abdul Qadir Baloch managed to convince the opposition members belonging to JI and PPP to return to the House, upon the request of Speaker Ayaz Sadiq.
Chaudhry went on with his criticism of the PTI mentioning details from the proceedings of the judicial commission formed to investigate alleged rigging in the 2013 general elections.
Sadiq asked the legislator to refrain from discussing the issue of NA-122 constituency since the NA Speaker is party to the case. Chaudhry replied that the he will not stop his debate on the subject and asked Ayaz Sadiq to hand over his speakership to some one else.
The NA speaker subsequently exited the House handing over the speakership to Deputy Speaker Murtaza Javed Abbasi.
Meanwhile, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), perturbed over the previous day’s remarks made by Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, also staged a walkout from the House.
Speaking on a point of order, Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah advised the treasury legislators to avoid hurling personal remarks against opposition members or their leadership as it is against traditions and pollutes the atmosphere of the House.
He said it is the responsibility of the government to avoid vitiating the atmosphere of the Lower House of the Parliament.
Shah added that PTI had ended the boycott of the Lower House of the Parliament after striking a deal with the government. He also lauded the graciousness of the PML-N government for accommodating PTI following their sit-ins and boycott.
