LAHORE: Consensus was developed in a joint meeting of the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) and the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) on Saturday that all additional privileges extended to former Supreme Court chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry should be withdrawn immediately.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Senate adjourned a resolution calling for withdrawal of additional perks and privileges from CJ Iftikhar Chaudhry, after both the leader of the House and leader of opposition said the matter was sub judice.
The Senate was earlier informed that the Cabinet Division was bearing the fuel and maintenance costs of a 6,000cc bulletproof car being used by former chief justice Iftikhar Chaudhry.
In a written reply, the law ministry told the House that the former chief justice was availing the facility in addition to his entitlement, ordered by the Islamabad High Court on January 15, 2014.
During a discussion of ex-chief justice’s perks in a Senate session, leader of the opposition Aitzaz Ahsan referred to the public admission by the ex-CJ that he had obtained a loan from the House Building Finance Corporation for his son’s marriage ceremony, a violation of law, and said the under-construction house of the ex-CJ in Lahore was “a building worth-seeing”.
The House was also told that since January 30, 2014, as much as 4,689 litres of petrol had been issued for the Mercedes Benz car being used by the ex-chief justice.
During the meeting today, the council members also expressed reservations over the ongoing appointment of judges, which they said were in direct violation of the law.
The meeting also called for copies to be submitted of references registered against judges.
An order was also issued that the petition registered regarding military courts should be heard and a verdict should be announced soon.
