The district coordination officer (DCO) confirmed that at least 12 people have died as a result of the blaze.
“Most of the people died as a result of suffocation and not from the blaze itself,” the DCO said.
He said that the fire enveloped the entire building within “four to five minutes.”
The cause of the fire has not yet been ascertained, but the DCO said that a short circuit may have caused it.
Earlier, rescue workers said they had pulled out nine bodies from the building. The bodies have been shifted to Mayo Hospital.
While speaking to DawnNews, an official confirmed that nine bodies had been brought to the hospital. He said that the dead included eight men and one woman.
The official said that one injured person was out of danger but had suffered 15 per cent burns on his body.
