Tension high after Hindu, Muslim clash in Indian state
UJJAIN—Clash between Hindus and Muslims erupted on the occasion of
Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi in Mahidpur area of Ujjain district in Madhya
Pradesh on Tuesday, March 10. Resultantly, one person was killed and
nearly 40 people were injured, which also included three police
officers. Since the situation was getting out of control and more
violence was expected so indefinite curfew was imposed in parts of
Ujjain district on Wednesday. Additional security forces personnel have
been deployed but situation is still tense. Muslims have demanded
inquiry into the incident and have threatened to lodge street protests
if action is not take against the culprits.
Meanwhile, as usual the Indian police and Hindus have blamed the Muslims
for tense situation and violence. According to Inspector General of
Police Pawan jain, the unrest erupted when the police stopped some
Muslims returning from a Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi procession from going to a
place where Hindus were holding a religious function. Some of those
stopped stoned the police, who used batons and tear gas to disperse
them. On the other hand, the Muslims claim that the Indian police and
Hindus have intentionally tried to instigate Muslims by allowing Hindus
to gather on their route. They said that majority of those injured are
Muslims.
