Friends need to be
cherished & treasured…
Uzma Zafar
WE get to meet lots of people
in this world but few that touch our hearts and with whom we share our
minds, who would slap us when we go wrong and we won’t mind when we
realize it was for our best, who would smile when we smile and give a
compassionate shoulder to cry upon when we feel low while pay a
listening ear when we want to talk, who can see through us and love us
without any ulterior motive around! That’s what a true friend is like.
Someone very rightly said once that ‘True friends are like diamonds,
precious, rich and rare while false friends are like dry leaves,
scattered everywhere!’
Everyone has someone in his life that he feels closer to and calls his
friend. Thus, to recognize the contributions made by friends,
International Friendship Day is celebrated each year on the first Sunday
of August and International Friendship Week is celebrated for the same
purpose beginning from a week before the actual day while ending at a
day ahead of the International Friendship Day which this year began on
28thJuly 2008 and ended here at 4th August, yesterday.
The tradition of dedicating a day in honour of friends began in US in
1935. Gradually the festival gained popularity and today Friendship Day
is celebrated in a large number of countries, including Pakistan. On
this day, people spend time with their friends and express love for
them. Exchange of Friendship Day gifts like flowers, cards and
wristbands is a popular tradition of this occasion.
It’s really sad to note that we do remember celebrating Mother’s Day and
Father’s Day but when it comes to celebrating the Friendship Day, if the
sms master forgets, we do it, but thanks to the sms fever prevalent
around, through some forwarded message, we get to remember the day. The
need is for treasuring our friends, today, tomorrow and every day after
the Friendship Day that remind us each year, bringing in the thought of
what our friends mean to us! |
