By Hina Kiyani

RAWALPINDI—With the professional knowledge and training acquired, young doctors of AM College contribute in a big way towards the national efforts to alleviate the sufferings of ailing humanity. The vital role that our youth has to play in solving the national problems cannot be over-emphasized.
There is no better way for these young graduates to pay back their debt to the nation than treating patients in agony, this was stated by Dr. Atta-ur-Rehman, Chairman Higher Education Commission of Pakistan while addressing at the auspicious occasion of 25th Convocation Ceremony held at Army Medical College, a constituent college of National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) on Wednesday, May 14, 2008.
The Chairman HEC expressed that the commendable results achieved speak high of the dedication and hard work of the graduating students and excellent teaching by the faculty. The Rector NUST and the Principal Army Medical College must be congratulated for their untiring efforts to promote the cause of medical education in the Country.
Army Medical College since its association with National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) as a constituent College has upgraded its labs, library and R & D infrastructure, thereby promoting research culture in the College.
Army Medical College, which had earlier taken a lead in initiating postgraduate programmes in medical sciences, including doctoral programmes in basic medical disciplines, has taken several steps to enhance the research facilities on the campus. New laboratories have been set up and huge quantities of latest laboratory equipment have been procured.
A large number of postgraduate students, both from the civil sector and from the Armed Forces, are utilizing these facilities. It goes without saying that these efforts of the college would go a long way in eliminating the chronic shortage of suitably qualified faculty particularly in the basic medical subjects in the medical colleges of the Country, he added.
Admiring present science and technology era, Dr. Atta-ur-Rehman expressed that the pace of technological and scientific growth in the field of medicine is tremendous. Miraculous developments in the fields of biotechnology, genetic engineering, pharmaceutical sciences and nanotechnology are transforming health care in a revolutionary manner.
Telemedicine has opened new vistas of patient care by making state-of-the- art medical support available to the remote areas of the world. In the prevailing scenario, it is particularly imperative for the new graduates to make full use of their talent in meeting the modern-age challenges. We must strive to improve the quality of technological education and research in our institutions, he added.
Dr. Atta-ur-Rehman extended his cordial felicitations to the graduating students of 26th MBBS and 5th BDS courses and wished them a big success in their future professional career.
Earlier Rector NUST, Lt Gen Muhammad Asghar in his address told that NUST was established about fourteen years ago with the objective of speedy attainment of capability in the newly emerging fields of sciences, engineering and technologies and thus develop competent scientific and technical manpower having international level of higher education to meet country’s public and private sector.
