Staff Report
Islamabad—Foundation for the Interaction of East & West (FIEW), a
newly-established dynamic non-profit and non-governmental organization
with one-point agenda to promote the cooperation and interaction between
active people of East and West has congratulated the people of European
Union on the Europe Day.
Sabah ud Din Qazi, Secretary General while talking to The Daily Mail
said that the FIEW Foundation fully supports the aims and the idea
behind to celebrate the year 2008 as European Year of Intercultural
Dialogue (EYID) 2008 by the European Union. “Celebration of National
Days and Important Events of other countries for emphasizing the
philosophy and ideology behind them shows commitment of our NGO to
practically follow the UN Charter and Universal Declaration of Human
Rights, which ask member countries to strengthen friendly relations and
social interaction with each other.” He expressed. He also acknowledged
the contribution of the EU for World Peace and Development, specially in
Pakistan. “Over these past 50 years the EU has practically demonstrated
that peace, cooperation and social interaction can replace conflict,
violence and exploitation, with spectacular results for every one of
us.” Qazi concluded.
Europe Day marks the anniversary of the day in 1950, when French Foreign
Minister Robert Schuman presented his proposal on the creation of an
organized Europe, indispensable to the maintenance of peaceful
relations. This proposal, known as the “Schuman declaration”, is
considered to be the beginning of the creation of what is now the
European Union. Today, the 9th of May has become a European symbol
(Europe Day) which, along with the Flag, the Anthem, the Motto and the
single currency (the Euro), identifies the political entity of the
European Union. |
