Import of 5m tones wheat decided: Sherry

ISLAMABAD—Information Minister Sherry Rehman has said cabinet has decided to import 5 million tones wheat immediately to meet its demand in the country.
Information minister said this during her press briefing here in Prime Minister secretariat after cabinet meeting Wednesday.
Federal cabinet met here under the Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and deliberated over persisting wheat and power crisis in the country. The cabinet also took serious notice of the reports that certain elements were supplying sub standard atta to the people by exploiting the atta crisis.
Giving details of the decisions taken in the meeting, Sherry Rehman told the cabinet expressed wonder over the erstwhile government claims that country would become self sufficient in the wheat growth within five years.
She held government was creating atmosphere of reconciliation in all the four provinces. Talks are underway with all major political forces to strengthen democratic institutions.
The cabinet expressed deep sorrow and regret over the incidents, which had taken, place before installation of provincial governments in Karachi and Lahore. They include maltreatment with Arbab Ghulam Rahim and violence against the lawyers on April 9 and former federal minister Dr Sher Afgan, she told.
It is top priority of government that peace and security is ensured in the country, she said adding Rehman Malik advisor to prime minister on interior assured that law and order situation would be ensured in both urban and rural areas.
