‘Legislation needed to resolve women grievances’
ISLAMABAD—Proper legislation is needed to resolve grievances of women in
distress and end the discriminatory laws.
This was stated by Humaira Alwani, MPA-elect Pakistan People’s Party
(PPP) from Sindh, during an interview with APP. Humaira Alwani assured
that PPP would take strong measures for enacting concrete legislation to
weed out physical and mental torture of the women who are in miserable
plight.
She further said that all inhumane and un-islamic customs and traditions
against the womenfolk especially in the interior and remote areas would
be terminated and punishments would be included in the legislation for
providing relief to the victims. Humaira Alwani further said the limit
of dowry would be fixed to the minimum for the facility of poor and
resource-less girls. She also said that the curses of ‘Karo Kari’ would
be dealt with heavy hand and share in property to womenfolk would be
ensured.
She pointed out that mortality rate in maternity cases was 30 per cent
in Sindh and the reason for which is non-availability of sufficient
medicare. Sheassured that arrangements would be made at the hospitals
and dispensaries to employ doctors and trained paramedical staff to deal
with these cases. Women representation, she said, would also be enhanced
in diverse fields to empower them in accordance with PPP’s manifesto.
It was an encouraging fact that 40 per cent of PM House budget and
lavish expenditures of the ministries would be curtailed that would
definitely save lot of funds for the needy, Humaira pointed out. Turning
to the point of wheat shortage she maintained that all loop holes would
be plugged and smuggling and black marketing would be brought to an end.
Commenting on price hike issue, Humaira Alwani said that PPP would take
effective measures for bringing down the soaring prices which are not
within the reach of common people. In this regard, she said, special
committees would be set to keep check on the prices for providing relief
to the oppressed segments of the society.
Humaira Alwani said that PPP would also take measures to provide
employment opportunities to the unemployed youth.She disclosed that a
large number of vacancies were lying for the last 10 years and stressed
the need to fill those vacancies by employing youth in diverse fields.
Humaira Alwani was confident that the majority of unemployed youth would
be adjusted against these vacancies on prior basis.
She has mentioned an important scheme as a part of PPP manifesto for
youth employment which would be initiated soon. Through that scheme
post-graduates would be inducted in different government departments for
2 years and sufficient compensation would be provided to them so that
they can arrange for them better opportunities in their careers by
gaining experience in these departments.
The girl students, she added would also be given special stipends so
that they may not be a burden on their parents and go ahead in their
educational fields without being worrying about the financial
