ISLAMABAD—Strongly condemning the manhandling of former federal minister Dr. Sher Afgan Khan Niazi in Lahore, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sherry Rehman Wednesday said Pakistan Democratic Alliance (PDA) government would not tolerate incidents of violence in the country.
“PDA and PPP government will not tolerate such incidents,” she tod. Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has ordered a probe of the incident and sought the report by today, she said adding, PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari has also strongly condemned the incident.
The Minister said culture of violence, intolerance and unethical values do not suit any civilized society. She said such events leave bad and negative impact on democratic norms and cultural values of a civilized society.
Sherry Rehman deplored that some elements from lawyers’ community who were reportedly involved in manhandling of Dr. Sher Afgan, while caretaker government and its administration did not stop them and remained silent spectators. Yet, she said, new government in Punjab has not taken over and such incidents have started occuring, which is inappropriate in a democratic set up.
