Lawyer movement faces barrage of anger

ISLAMABAD—President Pervez Musharraf has condemned the acts of
hooliganism in Lahore in which veteran politician and former Federal
Minister Dr. Sher Afghan Khan Niazi was manhandled and inhumane
treatment meted out to him. The President while condemning the incident
in the strongest possible terms, called upon the concerned authorities
to carry out an immediate inquiry so that the perpetrators of this
heinous act are identified and brought to justice.
Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has strongly condemned the
unfortunate incident of misbehavior with former Minister for
Parliamentary Affairs, Dr. Sher Afghan in Lahore this evening.
“This sort of misconduct is not acceptable in any civilized society”, he
added. The Prime Minister directed the provincial government to enquire
into the incident and apprehend the culprits who are attempting to
disrupt peace and harmony. He also asked the concerned officials to
ensure the welfare of Dr. Sher Afghan and his family.
Member of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Rabita Committee, Saleem
Shahzad Tuesday deploring torture by lawyers on former federal minister,
Dr. Sher Afghan Niazi in Lahore termed the incident a violation of human
and democratic values. Saleem Shahzad talked to Chief of Pakistan Muslim
League (PML-Q), Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain on telephone and sympathised
with him on torture by lawyers on Dr. Sher Afghan, said a statement
issued by MQM here.
Talking to Saleem Shahzad, Ch. Shujaat Hussain said this incident was a
conspiracy against the country and its people. Chaudhry Shujaat said we
have immediately convened a meeting of PML-Q leaders to decide future
strategy.
Chief of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Altaf Hussain Tuesday deplored
the torture by lawyers on former federal minister, Dr. Sher Afgan Niazi
in Lahore. He said that to disagree with the views of Dr. Sher Afghan is
a democratic right of every individual but manhandling of any one due to
difference og opinion is terrorism, said a statement issued here. Altaf
Hussain recalled that the Deputy Convener, MQM Rabita Committee, Dr.
Farooq Sattar had also been manhandled by some lawyers. MQM Chief termed
the torture on former federal minister, Dr. Sher Afghan as denial of
democracy. |
