Workshop clinch Walton trophy

LAHORE—General Manager, Operations, Pakistan Railways, Asad Saeed said
Railways has a glorious past in promoting sports and unearthing and
polishing talent and called for launching collective efforts to make
this institution for producing sportsmen by serving as a nursery.
He was speaking at the closing and prize distribution ceremony of the
Railways annual athletic meet which was retained by Workshop division
here on Saturday at tastefully decorated Railways stadium.
PRSB’s Vice President Irfan Gohar, Secretary Saeed Iqbal Khan, Sports
Officer Rashad Mahmood Butt, Divisional Sports Officers and Welfare
Inspector Sports of all Divisions and a large gathering witnessed the
track and field events with keen interest.
He said he was deeply impressed with the talent exhibited by sportsmen
in various disciplines and he was confident that they can put Railways
back at track of progress re-establishing its status as a reputed
institution known for grooming players.
Athletic Championship was participated by 400 athletes from 9 members
units of Pakistan Railways Sports Board Peshawar, Rawalpindi, Lahore,
Workshops, Multan, Sukkur, Quetta, Karachi, & Pakistan Railways Police.
Multan Division retained the Athletic Trophy by securing 301 points.
Workshops Division obtained Runners Up Trophy with 134 points followed
by Lahore Division 115 points. The other position holders are Karachi
109, Railway Police 38, Quetta 31, Headquarters 21, Rawalpindi & Sukkur
15, and Peshawar 3 Points.
Muhammad Ayub of Railway Police was declared the best male athlete of
the year for winning the 1500M, 5000M &10000. Mohammad Javed Iqbal of
Multan Division earned the distinction of being the fastest man of the
meet by capturing gold in 100M (10.9 sec). Samreen (Karachi Div) got the
award of Fastest Woman athletes by clocking (13.5 Sec) in 100m.
Workshops Division retained the Walton Trophy for overall Best
Performance in Sports Activities during the Year 2007-2008. Irfan Gohar,
Vice President,PRSB, in his address of welcome presented the report of
activities of the Board during the past years.
He said efforts are being made to further promote sports in railways
with the creation of job employment facilities and awarding of monthly
stipends to the aspiring athletes.
He said Railways struck notable performance in various national
championship and secured top positions. “ We are working hard on a
development plan to make Railways a department capable of producing
result in national sports and we are making gradual progress in this
direction”,he added. Later, the chief guest gave away the trophies and
prizes to the winning teams and officials. |
