NA to elect
new Speaker, Dy Speaker today

ISLAMABAD—The nomination papers of Dr. Fahmida Mirza, Israr Tareen,
Faisal Karim Kundi and Khushbakht Shujaat for speaker and deputy speaker
respectively have been approved after scrutiny. Pakistan Peoples Party
(PPP) and opposition parties have submitted nomination papers of their
candidates for speaker and deputy speaker of National Assembly on
Tuesday, private TV channel GEO reported. The final list would be issued
today and elections would be held tomorrow.
Secretary National Assembly Tuesday accepted the nomination papers of
the candidates of government and opposition parties for the slots of
Speaker and Deputy Speaker. The nominees of both treasury and the
opposition parties had filed their nomination papers with the Secretary
National Assembly at the Parliament House on Tuesday morning.
Dr. Fehmida Mirza and Faisal Karim Kundi, the PPP candidates for the
slots of Speaker National Assembly and Deputy Speaker respectively,
filed their nomination papers with the Secretary National Assembly here
at the Parliament House.
Both the PPP candidates, flanked by PPP leaders Raja Pervaiz Ashraf,
Syed Naveed Qamar, Farzana Raja, Arbab Muhammad Zahir and others,
reached Parliament House around 11 a.m. to file their papers. Fehmida
Mirza was proposed by MNAs Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Syed Naveed Qamar,
Farzana Raja, Arbab Muhammad Zahir, Maulana Qasim and Sardar Ayaz Sadiq.
Kundi was proposed by Dr. Azra Fazal Pichio, Mehreen Anwar Raja, Abdul
Mateen Khan and Syed Khurshid Shah. The candidates for both the slots
from the opposition parties filed their papers around 11:30 a.m.
Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Ch. Pervaiz Elahi, Senator Muhammad Ali
Durrani, Dr. Donia Aziz, Engr. Amir Muqam and others were also present.
Opposition candidate for Speaker’s slot Sardar Israr Tareen was proposed
by Dr. Donia Aziz, S.A. Iqbal Qadri and Engr. Amir Muqam. Khushbakht
Shujaat, the opposition’s nominee for the slot of Deputy Speaker, was
proposed by Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, Iqbal Muhammad Ali Khan, Abdul Qadir
Khanzada and Abdul Wasim.
Fahmida Mirza, the nominee of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and its
coalition Parties for the office of Speaker National Assembly has vowed
to come to the expectations of her Party and its allied parties. “There
is no alternate of late Former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and her
absence would always haunt us, she said this while talking to media men
after submitting her nomination papers for Speaker National Assembly on
Tuesday.
She said that she would try her level best to take treasury and
opposition members alongwith her, adding that, it is first time in the
Parliamentary history of Pakistan that a women would be elected as
Speaker National Assembly. |
