MINFAL to seek increase in wheat procurement price

ISLAMABAD—The Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock (MINFAL) has proposed to increase wheat procurement price from Rs. 510 to Rs. 650 per forty kilograms to support the growers and further enhance wheat cultivation.
“The increase in wheat procurement price will have positive impact upon the production of the crop as the growers will be encouraged to grow more crop,” an official told APP on Tuesday.
He said the government was committed to providing maximum return to the growers for their output to make the country achieve food self-sufficiency.
The government is providing fertilizers and other inputs including pesticides at subsidized rates to the growers to increase the area under wheat cultivation.
“The wheat price has witnessed an upward trend in the international market due to its increasing demand in the industrial sector,” he remarked.
He said that the current harvesting season had started from Sindh adding that the country-wide harvesting would commence within a few weak.
The official informed that the government had decided to procure about 5 million metric tons of wheat this year to fulfill domestic needs.
The Minfal has established its sale-points, hired manpower in different areas and will also provide sacks to farmers to help them prevent their crop, he said.—APP
