232 arrested
in Islamabad as restaurant bombing probe begins

ISLAMABAD—In the wake of a bomb exploded in the back garden of an
Italian restaurant crowded with foreigners in F-6 and National Assembly
Session begins today (Monday), the Islamabad Police have arrested 232
people including students of several madrassah.
During the operation that started after the bomb blast in Italian
restaurants on Saturday night and is underway, the Police have
apprehended 232 people including students of several madressah,
suspicious persons and Afghanis living in slum areas situated in
adjoining areas of Islamabad.
A Turk national nurse working at the US embassy in Islamabad was killed
in the restaurant blast on Saturday, while 15 others including the
nationals of America, Japan, Britain, Canada and China were wounded in
the incident.
The security personnel deputed at US embassy gathered evidence from the
‘Luna Capresse’, an Italian restaurant in sector F-6 in the federal
capital, sources said. According to the sources, explosive material
weighing 3 to 4 KG was used in the blast while splinters were not used
in the blast.
Meanwhile, a special investigation team headed by the SSP Islamabad Syed
Kaleem Imam has been formed to probe the incident. Syed Kaleem Imam
rejected the news that security personnel deputed at US embassy visited
the site and gathered evidence by saying only Pakistani security
agencies can conduct investigation in Islamabad.
The investigation team has decided to include the restaurant staff in
the investigation, he said, adding that, their record would also be
checked. Regarding security in Islamabad, he said, special security
arrangements have been taken keeping in view the National Assembly,
which begins today.
Vehicles entering in the city are being checked with metal detectors, he
said, added, guesthouses and hotels are being checked. Roundabout 1100
Police Personnel would perform their duties for maintenance of law and
order on the occasion of NA’s session, he concluded.
Investigative team headed by SSP Kaleem Imam has been formed to probe
into bomb blast on Saturday night at Italian Restaurant near Supper
Market. IG Islamabad, Shahid Nadeem Baloch while talking to journalists
said that team was consisted of members of CID and CIA.
He said that any conclusion regarding the nature of the blast would be
made after the report of Forensic experts. He said that a case had been
registered against unknown culprits in Kohsar Police Station.
