By Bushra Makhdoom
ISLAMABAD—PIMS has done 10960 free dialysis of patients suffering from
renal failure both acute and chronic renal failure in last year and will
continue to provide the state of art facilities to all the patients
including the patients suffering from kidney diseases.
These views were expressed by Executive Director of PIMS Dr Abdul Majeed
Rajput on world kidney day being observed today (Thursday). He said 200
to 250 patients of kidneys suffering from various kidney diseases visits
PIMS opd daily. Mostly kidney patients are suffering from infections of
kidneys ,stones in and out of kidneys acute renal failure and chronic
renal failure. Dr Imtiaz Masroor kidney specialist in PIMS said the
ratio of male and female patients is almost equal and they come from
Azad Kashmir, NWFP, Balochistan And from Sind also .He said function of
kidneys is 1.main source of erythropoietin which is produced in response
to hypoxia.2.kidneys are essential for vit.D metabolism 3.helps in
control of blood pressure 4 helps in volume and composition of body
fluids. Dr Ghias Butt nephrologist said causes of infection of kidneys
are bladder outflow obstruction, neurological problems, gynae problems,
urethral catheter and diabetes.
He said women who are prone to recurrent kidney infections should take
fluid at least 3 litres /day, regular complete emptying of bladder, good
personnel hygiene, control of diabetes and cranberry juice may be
effective. Pr. Sami J khan consultant Nephrologist at PIMS said
predisposing factors for renal stones are low urine volume, high protein
intake, high sodium in diet and low calcium in diet.
Prof. Khursheed Anwar urologist in PIMS said causes of renal failure are
heart failure, blood of fluid loss, stones, tumours and prostatic
enlargement mostly acute kidney failure is reversable .He said chronic
kidney failure is caused by5 % congeital diseases, 5%renal artery
stenosis,5 to 25%high blood pressure,20 to 40%diabetes ,5%systemic
inflammatery diseases and 5to 20%causes are unknown.
In order to prevent these disease one should go for routine check-up
yearly, control blood pressure and diabetes and regular antenatal
checkup as many patients came for dialysis after severe bleeding before
and after delivery. If fluid loss is more in vomiting or diarrhoea it
can lead to renal failure so one should start immediately fluid
replacement when symptoms appear, he said.
