By Tariq Chaudhry
ISLAMABAD—The Spokesperson of Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC)
has denied the report of Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) that
fungus will destroy wheat crop.
According to details, FAO warned Pakistan that UG99 from Uganda spread
into Kenya and Ethiopia, then crossed into Yemen and has recently been
reported in Iran.
This proximity presence and its wind borne spore spreading nature
threatens Pakistan wheat areas particularly where stem rust is to be a
problem.
However, Pakistan Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock said after
research that UG 99 would not effect on new crop of wheat and rice.
Pakistan researchers are actively engulfed in integrated activities to
combat the pathogen, the spokesperson PARC added.
