Are Rekha, Amitabh acting together again?
Noreen Aslam
BOMBAY—Is Bollywood repeating history, especially in the case of its
living reel pair, at least? One of the greatest love pairs in the
history of Indian cinema might come together again after a gap of 26
years. Yesteryears’ heartthrob and evergreen actor Rekha with who else
but the actor who gave so many hits with her to Bollywood, Amitabh
Bachchan, will be sharing screen again in Sujoy Ghosh’s ‘Alladin’. You
may recall that both the super actors have not worked together in any
film since their Yash Chopra’s ‘Silsila’ in 1981. The million-dollar
question, however, is about their characters in the forthcoming movie.
It is learnt that Amitabh Bachchan would play the role of the genie in
the film, which stars Riteish Deshmukh in the title role and Jacqueline
D’Souza would play Jasmine, Alladin’s love interest. What about Rekha’s
role? Yes, she would play an important role, too. Don’t get
disappointed, as she would have several scenes with her yesteryears’
hero. The shooting of the film might resume in March and overseas. Then,
another question is: why director Sujoy Ghosh isn’t confirming it? Is it
because it’s too early for him to announce? Maybe he doesn’t want to
take risk of losing his cast. After all, he had to replace his heroine
Ayesha Takia by Jacqueline. But, why does he call Rekha’s participation
as a rumor? There should be something more than meets the eye.
Eros International has announced the launch of Sujoy Ghosh’s modern day
‘Aladin’, the evergreen Arabian Nights story in a big Bollywood format,
which has recently gone on floors. With ‘Aladin’, Eros also makes a
foray into visual effects with their recently launched Eye Qube Studios
handling the same for the film.
