437 women in judicial lock up: Hamid

ISLAMABAD—Caretaker Federal Minister of Interior Hamid Nawaz has said that 437 women are in prison currently while there are four separate judicial lock up for women with a capacity of 528.
While answering the different questions during question hours in Senate session, the federal minister told that out of these four jails, three jails are in Sindh province and one jail is in Punjab besides this some barracks are specified in other jails for women adding that women prison along with their minors have been given relaxation in sentences.
He said that 261 women are in prisons of Punjab, 72 in Sindh, 77 in NWFP, 17 in Balochistan and one in AJK and steps have been initiated for the welfare of prisoner women and their minors.
He said that on the proposal of members of Senate, the Chairman Senate has directed the standing committee of Interior to form joint task force comprising of human right activists, women welfare and social welfare.
Chairman Senate also directed the proposed joint task force to visit the jails of four provinces and send their recommendations to chairman till April 20, 2008.
