WAPDA paying Rs6b net hydel profit to NWFP

ISLAMABAD—Caretaker Minister for Water and Power Tariq Hameed Tuesday said WAPDA is paying Rs 6 billion per year as net hydel profit to NWFP since 1991 in line with AGN Qazi formula. Replying to a question raised by Senator Muhammad Azam Khan Swati, the minister said WAPDA is paying amount to the NWFP government according to an interpretation of AGN Qazi formula.
He said a tribunal was constituted on the directives of Prime Minister but the NWFP government registered two cases in the Supreme Court and the matter is now in the court of law. To a supplementary question raised by Senator Raza Muhammad, he said high revenue was being used in thermal generation due to raise of prices in furnace oil from 25,000 to 40,000 rupees per ton. mSenator Sadia Abbasi while raising another supplementary question said the caretaker government should clarify its position whether there is an outstanding dispute between WAPDA and the NWFP government to help the upcoming provincial government betterly understanding the issue.—Online
