President
won’t quit, says Elahi

ISLAMABAD—President of Pakistan Muslim League-Q Punjab and former Chief
Minister Ch Pervez Elahi has said that President Pervez Musharraf is the
constitutionally elected president for 5 years and there is no need for
him to reign and neither he would be impeached by the new parliament.
Addressing a press conference at his residence in Islamabad Ch Pervez
Elahi categorically said, “President Musharraf has been elected as the
president for five years by the parliament and there is no need for him
to resign and neither he would”. He added that PML-Q would continue to
support President Musharraf.
In response to a question regarding impeachment of president by the new
parliament Ch Pervez Elahi said that the president would not be
impeached and the PML-N and PPP would not be able to reach a consensus
on this matter. He further said that PPP leader Amin Fahim has already
said that the parliament would not impeach the president.
Negating press reports that he is ready to form an alliance with PML-N
chief Nawaz Sharif, Elahi said that we will not talk to Nawaz Sharif
under any circumstances we have our own ideology and party.
Ch Pervez Elahi said that PML-Q can play a constructive role while
sitting in the opposition benches and would not become part of the
national government. It was unanimously decided in the meeting of
Parliamentary Party that we would not become Party of next Government
and would sit in opposition benches, he added.
He further said that PML-Q have got majority votes in Feb 18 elections
as compared to PML-N and emerged as strong Party in Sindh and
Balochistan. We are in position to form Government in Balochistan, he
said, adding that, there is representation of Party in four Provinces.
He vowed to perform well in next general elections. Our performance
would be tremendous if there is comparison between Government of PML-Q
with any previous Government, he pointed out. Chaudhary Pervez Elahi
added that no newly elected member of the national assembly can change
party in accordance with article 63 of the constitution and if he/she
did then they would have to resign.
A committee headed by Senator S. M Zafar has been constituted to redress
the complaints of Party members with regard to alleged rigging in the
elections, he maintained. The committee, Elahi said, after reviewing the
matters would submit the complaints before election commission of
Pakistan.
Former Chief Minister Punjab said his Party while sitting in opposition
benches would remind the pledges to leaders which they had made with the
nation during election campaign.
Vowing to support President Pervez Musharraf, President Pakistan Muslim
League - Q, Chaudhary Shujaat Hussain has said that his party is united
and dispelled the impression that there is any forward block in the
party.
Talking to a private TV Channel, the President PML-Q his party would sit
on the opposition benches and play its role for the strengthening of the
democratic process.
