Pak, India panel on prisoners to meet on 26th

ISLAMABAD—Pakistan-India retired Judges Committee would be holding a two day meeting in New Delhi from February 26 to work out a strategy for release of prisoners languishing in Pakistani and Indian jails. According to foreign office sources, the committee headed by Justice (retd) Nasir Aslam Zahid would be leaving for New Delhi on February 25.
The other members of the committee include Justice (retd) Mian Ajmal, Justice (retd) Kabir Chaudhry, Justice (retd) Fazl Karim. The Indian side includes Justice (retd) K.R. Riaz, Justice (retd) Amirjeet, Justice (retd) A.S. Gill and Justice (retd) M.A.Khan.
During the two days meeting the committee members of both the countries would devise a strategy on release of 900 prisoners languishing in each other jails. They would propose steps to ensure humane treatment and expedite release of prisoners who have complete their prison terms
According to sources, 500 Pakistani prisoners are languishing in Indian jails mostly civilians while 400 Indian prisoners are languishing in Pakistani jails mostly fishermen. During their visit the Pakistani judges delegation would also pay a visit to Jails and would meet prisoners.
In 2007 Pakistan and India established a committee on prisoners comprising retired judges of the superior judiciary to visit jails in the two countries.—Agencies
