Hanged convict’s eyes transplanted

KARACHI—Two patients registered at Spencer Eye Hospital had their eye sight restored after transplantation of corneas as per will of Javed Malik who was hanged in Central prison Karachi on Wednesday morning. The corneas were transplanted on 31 year old Mahboob Alam and 65 year old woman Allah Rakhi through a special operation carried out by Dr Masooduz-Zafar, Medical Superintendent Spencer Eye Hospital and his team mates Dr Parvez Sarwar and Dr Khalid Mahmood. The corneas of hanged Javed Malik were taken out in a short span of three hours and transplanted to Mahboob Alam and Allah Rakhi on the special directive of City Nazim Mustafa Kamal. It is for the first time in Pakistan after 10 years that corneas of a dying person have been transplanted to restore eye sight of two blind persons. Under the reforms brought in the medical department of city government, modern machinery has been purchased for Spencer Eye Hospital while Nazim Mustafa Kamal has also established a special fund for poor people.—Online
