CWP stunned by increase in Milk prices
Staff Report
Islamabad—Consumer Watch Pakistan (CWP) has strongly criticized the rise
in prices of essential commodities and apathy of the government to
control the trend.
The latest inclusion in the list is milk whose prices have been
increased in metropolitans and government authorities are altogether
unaware of the methods and mechanism to control the situation. As if the
current crisis of flour and sugar was not enough to break the back of
consumers, the price of milk has been raised by milkmen. The preliminary
surveys made in selected markets of Lahore and Islamabad show that
prices of the milk has been increased by Rs. 4. The milk was previously
being sold from Rs. 27 to 32 is now available from Rs. 34 to Rs. 36 per
KG. The yogurt is now being sold for Rs. 38 per Kg. In some markets of
Islamabad, its price has touched as high Rs. 42 per Kg.
This situation depicts the absence of the writ of the government to
control the prices of articles of daily use. The importance of milk in a
typical Pakistani family can hardly be under estimated. It is the basic
ingredient of the children diet and is also used in the tea, which is
the main drink for the adults in chilling weather. An average family is
spending Rs. 70 to 100 daily on milk alone. The increase in milk price
will further infuriate the consumers who are already exasperated with
rise in prices and scarcity of flour, sugar, ghee and LPG. s |
