Sonia Gandhi discharged from hospital
NEW DELHI—India’s ruling Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi was released
from a New Delhi hospital on Sunday after a five-day stay for a chest
infection, a hospital official said. The 61-year-old Gandhi had “fully
recovered” from her illness, B.K. Roy, chairman of the board of the
city’s Sir Ganga Ram hospital, said in a statement. “She is stable and
has been advised to continue rest,” Rao said. The Italian-born Gandhi
was plunged into the political limelight after her husband, former prime
minister Rajiv Gandhi — a member of the family’s third generation to
hold political power — was killed by a suicide bomber in 1991.—Agencies
