SY starts probe into BB’s murder

ISLAMABAD—Pakistani teams investigating into assassination of Benazir Bhutto has briefed Scotland Yard team about the details of probe so far conducted by them. Scotland Yard team will start its work formally from Saturday (today).
Interior ministry sources told Online Friday Pakistani team headed by additional IG and other team comprising officers of intelligence agencies which are investigating Liaqat Bagh tragedy handed over all videos, documents and record on correspondence between Benazir Bhutto and government on the former security arrangements to visiting Scotland Yard team besides assuring whatever help and cooperation is needed by them will be provided.
Sources revealed Scotland Yard will go to Liaqat Bagh and visit the site of assassination. Sources informed Scotland Yar team will not probe into incident on its own but it will help Pakistani investigation agencies in the matter. Heavy security has been provided to this team.
Pakistani agencies will also provide every possible help to visiting team so that it may face no difficulty during investigation process. The British Scotland Yard (SY) team which arrived here on Friday embarked on the investigation into the slaying of former prime minister, Ms Benazir Bhutto.
Earlier, the team was given a briefing by the Interior Ministry about the probe carried out so far by the local investigators into the incident. FIA Anti Terrorism’s Special Investigation Group apprised the SY team about the evidence gathered so far in connection with the murder of PPP leader.
The SY team, after holding detailed consultations with Pakistan Government, initiated a fully fledged probe into the incident. They will be extended full cooperation by SIG in this task.
However, the matters regarding the team’s contact with the eye witnesses besides autopsy of the body of Ms Bhutto are yet to be finalized. Meanwhile, the office bearers of Pakistan Peoples Party have been expressing distrust on locally conducted investigation and have demanded probe into the murder of Ms Bhutto under United Nations’ appointed investigators. President Pervez Musharraf had announced to invite Scotland Yard’s investigative team to the country in his address to the nation on Wednesday night.
A team of British anti-terrorism police flew into Pakistan on Friday to help investigate the killing of Benazir Bhutto, a move rejected by the opposition leader’s party as “meaningless.”
The specialists from Scotland Yard arrived amid raging controversy over the assassination of the former premier, which sparked a wave of bloody unrest across Pakistan and forced the postponement of elections.
