SC decided 586 cases in December 2007

ISLAMABAD—Supreme Court of Pakistan disposed off 586 cases during the month of December 2007 whereas 644 new cases were instituted. The backlog of cases in Supreme Court on 1st January 2008 is 15189.
The backlog in the apex Court on 1st December 2007 was 15131 cases. As 644 new cases were instituted during the month of December 2007, the progressive total of pending cases as on 31st December 2007 comes to 15775. Out of these, 586 cases were disposed off in the month of December; the backlog on 1st January 2008 remains 15189.
The Hon’ble Chief Justice of Pakistan Mr. Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar constituted Benches at the Principal Seat, Islamabad and Branch Registries Lahore, Karachi and Peshawar to expedite the case hearings and clear the backlog.
The Hon’ble Chief Justice of Pakistan and the Hon’ble Judges of Supreme Court remain committed to accelerated/ expeditious disposal of the cases and diminish the back log and despite the fact that there were winter vacations in the apex Court during the month of December 2007 the Hon’ble Judges continued to hear the cases in various benches with the aim to minimize the backlog and provide relief to the litigants.
In Supreme Court Main Registry, Islamabad 424 cases were instituted and 343 cases were disposed off during the month. In Supreme Court Branch Registry, Lahore 124 cases were instituted and 67 cases were disposed off. In Branch Registry, Karachi 49 cases were instituted and 128 cases were disposed off. In Branch Registry, Peshawar 36 cases were instituted and 43 cases were disposed off and in Branch Registry Quetta 11 cases were instituted and 5 cases were disposed off. Thus total institution during the month was 644 while disposal of cases at Supreme Court Main Registry as well as Branch Registries was 586.
