Violence
erupts in various cities following Bhutto’s killing
KARACHI— The assassination of Pakistan Peoples Party Chairperson,
Benazir Bhutto, on Thursday evening triggered violence across the
country as supporters came out on streets to give vent to their grief.
Violence has erupted in many areas of Karachi, as supporters clash with
the police in Defence, Clifton, Lyari and Malir. Petrol pumps and
vehicles have been set on fire in Gizri, Lyari and Nazimabad.
More than 80 vehicles were torched in different areas of the city.At
least 12 vehicles, restaurants and banks were set ablaze in Hyderabad.
Enraged PPP activists in Rawalpindi blocked Murree road as they burned
tyres and PML (Q) banners. Supporters in the capital pelted stones at
Aabpara market and burnt a police checkpost at Chandi Chowk.
Riots also erupted in Peshawar and Quetta. Supporters burnt a car on GT
road and attacked the Gulbahar police station in Peshawar. Quetta felt
the wrath of supporters as they burnt tyres across the city.
Public buildings in Sukkur were also badly damaged. Supporters are armed
with batons and petrol pumps have been shut. Protestors have taken to
the streets in Mirpukhas and Shikarpur. There are reports of firing
around Mirpurkhas and attacks on the banks in Shikarpur. Over 100 shops
in the cloth market in Nawabshah were also set on fire. |
