SAC announces nationwide protest on 17th
By Saad Saud

Islamabad—The Student Action Committee has announced a nationwide protest on December 17th and invited all pro-democracy forces to participate and continue the movement for genuine democratization in the country.
The SAC has issued a call in the federal capital, Lahore, Peshawar and numerous other cities in the immediate aftermath of the lifting of emergency to make clear that the regime remains illegitimate in the eyes of the people and the demands for restoration of the pre-November 3 judiciary, lifting of curbs on the media, permanent withdrawal of the army from politics, and restoration of student unions.
The convenor of SAC Islamabad/Rawalpindi has said that the fact that students are issuing the protest call reflects the fact that the moral conscience of society refuses to accept the Musharraf dictatorship and is well aware the fraudulent 'election' process currently underway does not represent a change from the past 8 years of misrule. She said that the regime has tried various tactics to coopt and silence the resistance movement but none of them has succeeded and this latest attempt will also fail as the critical mass of
lawyers, journalists, political workers and students will not settle for anything but a complete transfer of power from the establishment to the people, which is not possible through this phony election.
Alia Amirali has said that the students have been emboldened by recent arrests and other forms of state repression against them, including harassment by the intelligence agencies. She said that despite their limited political experience, students are convinced that the state is weak and its attempts to intimidate through the intelligence agencies simply reflects the moral quandary it faces in dealing with the new wave of student activism.
She said that on December 17th, students would once again prove that the future leadership of this country seeks a complete break with the corrupt and self- serving leadership that is still surviving till now.
