PPP welcomes PML-N decision to take part in polls
By Muhammad Ali Malik
ISLAMABAD—The Pakistan Peoples Party has welcomed the decision by PML-N/
APDM to participate in the forthcoming elections under protest,
following the advice of the PPP Chairperson Benazir Bhutto.
In a statement Monday Secretary General of the Party Mr Jehangir Bader
said that this vindicates the PPP’s strategy for securing restoration of
democracy. He said that the PPP is pleased that Mr Nawaz Sharif, the
co-signatory to the Charter for Democracy has done what Mohtarma Bhutto
had proposed in terms of political strategy. Mohtarma Bhutto returned to
the country without giving up any principle but was unfairly criticized.
She faced a maniacal attack on her life in which 179 workers and
security personnel were killed. But her return and strategy of dialogue
helped open up political space for all political forces, including Mian
Nawaz Sharif.
Similarly, he said, Mohtarma Bhutto has maintained that we should
protest against the martial Law of November 3 and the regime plot to rig
the elections but the opposition should not leave the field wide open to
the Kings Party. Jehangir Bader said that the PPP welcomes the fact that
leader PML-N has recognized that Mohtarma Bhutto’s choice was sagacious.
The PPP will continue to oppose dictatorship and seek people’s support
against the rigging of elections. The PPP also look forward to continued
cooperation among opposition parties for the implementation of the
Charter of Democracy, he said. |
