Govt committed to welfare of special persons

ISLAMABAD—The government is committed to the welfare and rehabilitation of special persons aimed at bringing social revolution in the country.
Speaking at a seminar held here Monday in connection with International Disabled Day, Director General Directorate General of Special Education, Sarfaraz Ahmed Syed said special people areimportant segment of our society and their active participation is necessary for the country’s development.
The event was organized by the Social Welfare and SpecialEducation Ministry to promote full participation of disabled in social life and development as well as prevention and rehabilitation measures.
Speaking on the occasion, Director General said the government has taken a number of steps towards the rights of persons with disabilities. In this regard, formulation of first ever National Policy forpersons with Disabilities 2002 is s major step, he added. He said it has been followed by a National Plan of Action to implement the National Policy for Persons with Disability.
This plan, he said, aims at determining the extent ofdisabilities and it causes, improving the medical rehabilitationservices, promoting inclusive education for children with special needs, reinforcing vocational training, arrangements of employment and economic rehabilitation, developing legislative support forpersons with disabilities and creation of barrier-free physicalenvironment. Senior official of the Ministry, representatives from various NGOs and a number of special persons were also present.
