won’t be tolerated: President

ISLAMABAD—President Pervez Musharraf urging all the political parties to
take part in general elections said that politics of agitation would not
be tolerated at any cost adding all should play their respective role in
the promotion of democratic process rather than talking of boycotting
the elections as level playing filed was being provided to all political
parties
“All the political parties should play their role in moving forward the
democratic process. They should run their election campaign and depart
from talking about boycotting the elections”, he said this while
presiding over a high level meeting here Saturday in Aiwan-e-Sadr.
Meeting was attended by all the four governors, care taker chief
ministers and high ranking officers.
Aiwan-e-Sadr sources told reporters overall situation of the country,
arrangements for holding fair and transparent elections,
responsibilities of provincial governments and economic situation of the
country came under discussion. President Musharraf once again said in
categorical terms government would ensure holding of fair and
transparent elections adding full support would be extended to election
commission in this respect. Law and order situation would be maintained
at every cost during the elections, he announced. Provincial
governments, police and law enforcement agencies should play their role
to ensure holding of election in peaceful environment, he underscored.
President Musharraf made it clear once again that army would remain
ready to assist civil administration in the areas where the situation
would deteriorate. No one should be allowed to take law into one’s
hands, he cautioned. Provincial government in collaboration with
district governments should ensue law and order situation in respective
provinces, he urged. Implementation of code of conduct be also ensured,
he added. Every possible help be provided to election commission during
the election, he underlined.
He told foreign observers and media could monitor the upcoming general
elections. Government would provide them help and assistance in this
regard, he added. “We have not only to sustain the pace of economic
growth but we have also to improve it so that common man benefits from
it “, he stressed. President directed the provincial governors and chief
ministers to keep on monitoring prices of essential commodities and not
to allow hoarding at any cost. Steps be taken to contain inflation, he
urged. Governors and chief ministers apprised the president of the law
and order situation in respective provinces and other matters.
