By Saad Saud
ISLAMABAD—The journalists Community held a protest rally against
emergency rule and curbs on media here on Thursday.
A large number of journalists including representatives of civil
societies, political workers marched from Press Club to PEMRA Head
Office.
The participants were holding banners and placards inscribed with
slogans of freedom of speech and anti-government slogans. Secretary
General Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) Mazhar Abbas while
addressing the protest rally said that journalists struggle which was
started months back against the restrictions on media would continue
till they do not achieve their goal. Mazhar Abbas said that to get
signatures from some of the Private Channels under the PCO and restoring
their transmission does not mean that government has freed the media.
President RIUJ, Afzal Butt said that after doffing the uniform,
President wants to give impression to International Community that there
is real democracy in Pakistan. However, he said that restoration of real
democracy depends on restoration of those 55 Judges who do not take oath
under the PCO. He demanded from the government to immediately withdraw
the PEMRA Amended Ordinance 2007 and Press & Publication Ordinance,
otherwise journalists would continue their protests demonstration. Later
on, they marched from Melody Press Club to PEMRA Head Office where
renowned Journalists Talat Hussain presented his programme “ Live With
Talat” with the title “Role of Political Parties in the Current
Situation of Pakistan”. |
