MMA, APDM in
quandary over boycott
ISLAMABAD—The Supreme Council of Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) failed to
take any decision on whether or not to attend the APDM meeting to be
held tomorrow (Thursday). During the meeting that lasted for five hours,
the MMA leaders discussed in detail whether or not to attend APDM
meeting with JUI- F leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman showing reservations
over the suggestion to attend it.
He was of the view that no formal invitation has been sent from the APDM
platform and ‘we should thoroughly think on each and every aspect of the
issue.” The meeting formally restored Maulana Muhammad Khan Sherani as
head of MMA Balochistan Chapter after listing the views of the
participants. After the meeting, MMA leader Liaquat Baloch talking to
media expressed the hope that all component parties of MMA would attend
the upcoming APDM meeting.
Chairman Pakistan Muslim League (N) Raja Zafarul Haq has said that
opposition is divided on the issue of boycotting the forthcoming general
elections. Talking to a private television channel, he said there are
two opinions in the opposition ranks some parties want to participate in
the election and some want to boycott them in the prevailing conditions.
To a question he said boycott would be affective only if major political
parties in the opposition opt for it otherwise it may prove
insignificant.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan said on Wednesday
that he would try to persuade all the components of the All Parties
Democratic Movement (APDM) at its forthcoming meeting to boycott the
coming general elections. “We are trying our level best that all the
political parties unite on a single point agenda and boycott the
election unanimously,” he said while talking to reporters.—Online
