released from prison
DERA GHAZI KHAN—PTI chairman Imran Khan has been released from Dera
Ghazi Khan jail under the directives of care taker chief minister of
Punjab Justice (Retd) Ejaz Nisar.
Care taker chef minister Punjab Wednesday had issued orders for release
of all political leaders and workers detained across the province. Imran
Khan was arrested from Punjab University Lahore on November 14 when he
was handed over to police by a group of Islami Jamiat-e-Tulaba (IJT).
Imran Khan had gone to Punjab University to address the students but he
was not permitted. He was subjected to violence by IJT workers. Police
had arrested him and registered a case under anti terrorism act. He was
shifted from Lahore to Dera Ghazi Khan jail. PTI chairman had been
observing hunger strike since the last three days to press his demand
for lifting of emergency and independence of judiciary.
Pakistan cricket legend Imran Khan was freed from jail Wednesday in the
latest chapter of a storied career that has taken him from sporting hero
to fledgling pro-democracy icon.
From his hunger strike in detention to the campaign led by his glamorous
British ex-wife for his release, the headlines spawned by Khan’s jail
drama have often overshadowed the political crisis in his country.
Khan’s stance against the state of emergency imposed by President Pervez
Musharraf has also enhanced his political reputation after years of
languishing as the sole MP of his tiny opposition party.—Agencies |
