Committee to be set up to steer auto policy
Staff report

ISLAMABAD—Engineering Development Board (EDB) will soon establish an Auto Industry Development Committee (AIDC) with an objective to provide focused and continued attention to the auto industry at the government and private level, official sources said.
“AIDC will have a regular dialogue and effective communication with the industry and it will steer the implementation of EDB’s recently prepared Auto Industry Development Programme (AIDP),” the sources said.
It merits a mention here that AIDP has been developed to facilitate and encourage the investment, domestic competition, enhance competitiveness and stimulate innovation through technology acquisition, human resource development, capacity expansion and auto cluster development.
The programme is aimed to encourage continuation and increasing indigenization, and facilitate auto industry’s integration into the global supply chain. It will also regulate the policy regarding import of used vehicles so as not to impede the growth of the local industry while protecting consumers’ interest.
The AIDC would conduct an assessment and review of the policy initiatives of AIDP annually and up to five years to evaluate its effectiveness.
It will also recommend corrective measures, whenever necessary, to keep the AIDP on its course to achieve the laid down objectives, the sources added.
