150 houses handed over to earthquake
victims

ISLAMABAD—Lions Club International has handed over 150 houses, built for
earthquake-hit people at Anwar Sharif village near Muzaffarabad, to
deserving beneficiaries.
The project comprising of houses, school, mosque and a water supply
scheme, has been completed at a cost of $ 892,000, equal to Rs 85
million. Lions Club International has completed this project in
collaboration with The Citizens Foundation.
Former International President of Lions Club International Ashok Mehta
visited the project site. On the occasion, the International Director of
Lions Club International Malik Khuda Bukhsh, members of the club who
came from different part of the country, representatives of The Citizens
Foundation, government and local dignitaries were also present.
Speaking on the occasion, the chief guest Mehta appreciated the efforts
of all the stakeholders in completion of this project.
Malik Khuda Bukhsh said the Lions Club International is a human welfare
organization, whose members are spread all over the world. He said after
October 8, 2005 devastating earthquake, the Lions Club International was
requested to provide financial assistance. The Board of Directors of the
Club convened an emergency meeting and approved an amount of $ 892,000
for the project of construction of 150 houses for the victim families.
Bukhsh appreciated the assistance provided by the Government of
Pakistan, The Citizens Foundation and local people for completion of
this project. He said the Club would establish girls’ school and basic
health unit in the area. He informed that the Club has launched an
international movement to eradicate blindness in Pakistan. Funds are
being collected, which would be provided to the major eyes hospital in
both private and public sectors all over Pakistan, he added. |
