India claims
envoy’s house break-in
NEW DELHI—India said on Wednesday it had registered a strong protest
with Pakistan against a break-in at the house of its envoy in Islamabad.
A statement from the Indian foreign ministry said the incident had
occurred on the night of Nov. 12 but did not elaborate.
“A strong protest has been lodged with the government of Pakistan in
Islamabad and with the High Commission of Pakistan in New Delhi,” it
said.
Nuclear-armed Pakistan is witnessing some of its worst political turmoil
in years and President Pervez Musharraf imposed a state of emergency
this month saying it was necessary to hold fair elections.
Relations between India and Pakistan, old rivals who have fought three
wars, have vastly improved since they launched peace talks in 2004 to
try to resolve a range of disputes, including the thorny territorial
tangle over Kashmir.
In the past, each country has accused the other of harassing its
diplomats. They have also carried out tit-for-tat expulsions of embassy
officials after accusing them of spying.—Agencies |
