Emergency imposed to counter terrorism: Durrani

ISLAMABAD—Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Muhammad Ali Durrani said the emergency was imposed in order to use it as an effective instrument to counter the menace of terrorism.Speaking to PTV, he said elections will be held to ensure progress and prosperity in the country.
He observed that President General Pervez Musharraf always fulfilled his election promises.
During his government, elections were held for the office of president, national and provincial assemblies and local governments, he added.
It is for the first time in the history of Pakistan that the assemblies will be completing their tenure, Durrani remarked.
He expressed the hope that the next assemblies will also complete their tenure.
He said PCO was in place due to the existing situation on the ground. The intention is not to achieve any hidden objectives but to secure announced objectives, the Minister added.
He assured that steps will be taken according to the 1973 constitution.
The Minister said elections will be held on time and new representatives will come into power by getting support and votes of the people.
