7 police officials go behind bars

ISLAMABAD—The Supreme Court Thursday passed an order to sentence seven officials of Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) including two high-ranking officials the then IG and SSP Islamabad for maltreating the chief justice of Pakistan Chaudhry Muhammad Iftikhar on 13 March 2007.
Three-member SC bench headed by Justice Ranan Bhagwandas gave the verdict in the said case. IG Chaudhry Iftikhar and SSP Zaffar Iqbal were sentenced for 15 days whereas DSP Jamil Hashmi, Inspector Rukhsar Mehdi and guard Sirja were sentenced for one month. The SC also sentenced chief commissioner Islamabad and deputy commissioner till adjournment of the court but later the sentence was suspended on the appeal of the counsel of the said officials.

Justice Javed Iqbal, the then acting Chief Justice of Pakistan had taken the suo moto notice of CJP Pakistan Chaudhry Muhammad Iftikhar manhandling case after Mr. Iftikhar was non-functional CJP.
