Aqeel in
singles semis, Asim, Shehzad in doubles final of International tennis
ISLAMABAD—Aqeel Khan of Pakistan marched into men’s singles semi-final
while Pakistani pair of Asim Shafiq, Shehzad Khan qualified for the
doubles final of Askari Bank Pakistan Futures International Ranking
Tennis Tournament at PTF Complex clay courts on Thursday.
Aqeel Khan disposed of Bo Sung Kim of South Korea 6-1, 6-1 while the
three foreigners to make it to the last-4 stage were Adam Vejmelka
(Czechoslovakia), Hyun Soo Lim (South Korea) and Bogdan Victor Leonte
(Romania).
Aqeel Khan of Pakistan, exhibiting his trademark baseline game, was in
good form and won the first set by breaking the 2nd and 4th games of
Kim.In the second set, Aqeel broke serve in the 1st,5th and 7th games of
his rival.
Pakistan no.1 Aqeel will now face top seed Adam Vejmelka of
Czechoslovakia at 11.00 A.M on Saturday. Top seed Adam Vejmelka was
given a though time by Godamanna from Sri lanka taking him to full
distance before losing a tight fist set in a tie break. He also made him
work hard in the second set before losing the match in two hours five
minutes.
Hyun-Soo Lim beat Alexander Gigitashvili of Russia in straight sets at
6-0,6-3. In the last quarter final, Bogdan-victor Leonte (Romania)
outplayed Indian Ashwin Vijayragavan by displaying powerful service and
hard ground strokes from the base line.
He will face now Hyun Soo Lim in the second semi final at 2.30 P.M on
Saturday. In the Men’s Doubles event, Shahzad Khan/Asim Shafiq and Adam
vejmelka(Czechoslovakia)/Bogdan Victor Lenote (Romania) qualified for
the Doubles final when they beat their respective opponents in the
semi-finals.
Shahzad Khan/Asim Shafiq played quality tennis and won the match in well
contested three sets against Jeong Hyun Seo (Korea)/Ashwin vijayragavan
(India) 2-6, 6-4, 11-9 (Super Tie Break). Asim and Shehzad will now face
Victor Leonte/Adam Vejmelka (Czechoslovakia) at 11.00 A.M Friday in the
final. Adam/Leonte beat Bo-Sung Kim/Hyun Soo lim in another three set
thrilling match 6-4,6-7(3),10-7. Mens Dzouble’s final will start at
11.00 A.M. Friday.Men’s singles semi-finals will be played at 11.00 A.M
and 2.30.P.M respectively on Saturday.
