Probe team
chief removed on BB’s wish
Bureau Report
KARACHI—Federal Government on Wednesday removed Deputy Inspector General
(DIG) Manzoor Mughal who is heading the Investigation team to probe
October 18 carnage in Karachi. It is pertinent to mention that on the
demand of Benazir Bhutto, Federal Government has removed DIG Manzoor
Mughal from the investigating team.
The police Officer was heading the investigation team probing the
devastating suicide blasts that targeted former PM Benazir Bhutto. The
said step has taken place after BB was of the view that she has no
confidence in the current Chief, DIG Manzoor Mughal whom she accuses of
involvement in the torture of her spouse Asif Zardari.
Sources added that the other four members in the Investigation team have
been asked to stop their probe, which means that a new Investigation
team to probe the devastating suicide blasts that targeted former PM
Benazir Bhutto will be constituted soon.
The Special Investigation team setup to probe into October 18 bomb
blasts in the procession of PPP Chairperson Benazir Bhutto which claimed
140 lives and injuries to over 500, will be replaced with a new team.
Stating this Sindh Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim told a press
briefing after his Cabinet meeting Wednesday that as told by IGP, the
PPP which is the aggrieved party in the incident, had raised objections
on the present team.
He said he told the IGP to appoint a person for inquiry in whom the PPP
had their confidence. However, he pointed out that inquiries in such
cases do not restrict to Provincial level but federal government and
many sensitive agencies do get involve in investigations.
He informed that some progress has been made in the incident but cannot
divulge the same as it will affect the inquiry and the culprits involved
will get alerted. He said there was no need to carry out investigation
through foreign experts as our own experts are capable of performing the
required task.
He recalled that culprits in cases like bombing at Nishtar park,
assassination of Allama Hasan Turabi and other cases had been arrested
and no such case remained pending with Sindh government. When asked
about Bebazir Bhutto’s demands for certain changes in the
administration, the Chief Minister said that she can do it when she
comes into power but not in our government.
When a questioner sought his comments that Benazir has also mentioned
his name among the three names he gave to President, Dr Arbab said that
she can mention his name not once but for ten times. He said they were
looters of the wealth of country and were fugitive.
He asked why they flee from the country. He demanded that no pardon
should be granted to them because once such an example is set, never any
thief could be caught. |
