Sh. Rashid Expressway to be constructed on design-measurement basis

ISLAMABAD—The Sheikh Rashid Expressway between Islamabad and Rawalpindi would be constructed by Frontier Works Organization FWO on Design and Measurement basis instead of turn-key basis. The decision was reached on Friday in a meeting held in the Planning Division.
Chaired by Deputy Chairman Planning Commission Akram Sheikh was attended by Minister for Railways Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, Chairman Planning Development Punjab, members of the Planning Commission, Engineer-in-Chief Pakistan Army, Director General FWO and other senior officers concerned to the project.
The meeting reviewed the project in detail and decided that FWO should execute the project with overall role of supervision - from design to construction work. The meeting decided to immediately release funds of Rs 200 million for immediate implementation of the project.
It also decided that an agreement should be formally signed between Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA), NESPAK and FWO on October 26 to kick off formal launch of the project in a smooth manner.
The meeting showed consensus on the completion of the project in variouspackages and the executor of the project can undertake one or more packages at a time.The meeting also accorded approval that the cost of the project should notbe capped with a clear-cut instruction to the executor of the project to keep the cost of the project at the minimal ebb.Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, who also is the chairman of the steering committee ofthe project, said that speed of the project needs be enhanced in line toprovide facilities to the people of the twin cities at the earliest.FWO chief assured that executing agency would take all possible care to speed up pace of work on the project.
